NVIDIA is putting capital directly into a customer’s AI infrastructure buildout, not just selling it GPUs.
NVIDIA is investing $1 billion in Naver, the South Korean internet and cloud services company, to support Naver’s AI data center expansion, according to a report from GuruFocus.
The report frames the investment as part of NVIDIA’s broader approach to growing demand for its AI hardware: rather than treating cloud and internet companies purely as chip customers, NVIDIA is committing its own capital to help fund the data center capacity those customers need to deploy AI workloads. Naver operates search, cloud, and AI services across South Korea and has been building out its own infrastructure to support those businesses.
GuruFocus did not detail a timeline or specific sites tied to the $1 billion commitment, and further terms of the arrangement were not specified in the report.
What it means for operators: vendor capital tied directly to data center buildouts is becoming a more visible part of how AI infrastructure gets financed and built. Whether the money comes from a cloud provider’s own balance sheet or from a chip supplier writing a check, the physical constraints on standing up new AI capacity do not change. Power availability and cooling capacity remain the pacing items for how fast any of these buildouts can actually come online, regardless of how the capital behind them is structured.
