Meta plans a $40 billion expansion of its Louisiana AI data center, a commitment that would more than double the size of the existing campus.

Forty billion dollars is a huge investment. it’s a number that would normally be associated with a national infrastructure program. This is not an incremental upgrade to an existing facility, but rather a second data center grafted onto the first.

It doubles the load the grid has to deliver and the heat the plant has to move, and it doubles the amount of thermal margin that has to hold when something in the cooling chain breaks. Density is what separates an AI hall from the enterprise room most of this industry learned on. Power and heat decide the actual capacity. For nearby operators watching a build of this size land in their region, you need to be asking some questions about its impact on your own facilities. How much headroom does your own hall really have, rack by rack, and is that number measured or assumed? Grid capacity tightens around projects like this, and a figure on a drawing is a weaker answer than one taken from the room.
