Furukawa Electric expands fiber capacity for AI bandwidth demand
Furukawa Electric is investing 100 billion yen to expand optical fiber production capacity, The Fast Mode reports. The expansion targets high-speed connectivity demand from scaling AI data centers.
AI workloads drive surging bandwidth requirements and depend on dense fiber interconnects to move data between servers, racks, and facilities at AI training and inference speeds. Furukawa joins other fiber and optical component suppliers ramping capacity to match hyperscale and colocation build cycles.
For AI builds, fiber and optical interconnect capacity is a strategic bottleneck alongside power and cooling equipment. As facilities pack more compute per rack, power and thermal pressures strain electrical infrastructure and interconnects. Operators tracking rack-level power and temperature data get earlier warning when density increases outpace a facility’s infrastructure capacity, fiber included.
